Parliamentarians get a grilling

Jack Callaghan has turned his attention to grilling MPs and peers following his interviews with several film stars

A TWELVE-YEAR-OLD boy who won an award for his interviews with film stars has now turned his attention to grilling MPs and peers.

Jack Callaghan, of Church Street, Great Bedwyn, beat thousands of other entrants to became a young ambassador for Filmclub, a charity with 300,000 members which offers children free access to films, industry screenings and premieres.

This gave him the opportunity to attend a number of premieres and interview the likes of Sir Elton John, Sir Michael Caine, Matt Lucas and head of Pixar Studios, John Lasseter, for which he won young interviewer of the year at Filmclub in the eight to 12 age group.

The former Great Bedwyn Primary School pupil, who has recently started at St John's School in Marlborough, has now been questioning MPs and peers in Parliament for a short film which Filmclub is producing for Parliament Week which starts on Monday (31).

The 12-year-old interviewed the likes of Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Simon Hughes MP, Lord Ramsbotham and Lord Wei on topics such as who is their most inspirational leader and how can young people participate in democracy.

“It was great to visit the Houses of Parliament to the chambers where our laws are made,” he said. “I found it very inspiring. I couldn't believe I was standing in the same place where of our great leaders have stood.

“I found it fascinating because it gave me an insight into how the country is run.

“All of the lords and MPs I spoke to were really nice. I thought they would be straight faced and stubborn but they were just normal people.

“I particularly enjoyed meeting Lord Wei, who is one of the youngest lords. He was very interesting and helped me understand more about how Government works."

Jack's interviews with the MPs and peers can be seen in a documentary produced by Filmclub for Parliament Week called ‘Making a Difference', which can be viewed via www.filmclub.org from Monday.
