Pedestrians report receiving verbal and physical abuse amid A4 traffic chaos

Pedestrians in Calcot have reported feeling unsafe amid traffic chaos on and around the A4 Bath Road.

There are roadworks on the left lane of the A4 between its junction with Challington Road roundabout and just before the M4 due to emergency gas main works by SGN.

This closure, near Sainsbury’s, has led to serious delays – especially during rush hour.

The works are due to end on December 4.

Some motorists have been using Royal Avenue to avoid the roadworks – particularly during rush hours.

There is a School Streets scheme in place in this area during Calcot School’s drop-off and pick-up times.

West Berkshire Council says this scheme restricts access to residents only during these periods.

It said: “This is in place for the safety of pupils and parents near to the school, as well as providing environmental benefits.”

But some drivers are ignoring the restrictions.

Pedestrians have told the council that this makes them feel unsafe due both to an increase in traffic and verbal and physical abuse they have received.

A spokesperson for West Berkshire Council said: “Please allow extra time for your journey.

“And continue to drive respectfully and responsibly through Calcot whilst the roadworks, and our work to install ANPR cameras on Royal Avenue, are completed.”

The closure is to allow SGN to repair its gas network for local properties.

It is replacing its old metal gas mains and services with new plastic pipe.

SGN’s contractor I&G began work on September 8 for around 18 weeks.

Dorking Way is also closed at its junction with Bath Road.

SGN said traffic exiting the retail park at Sainsbury’s will be able to turn left as usual.
