People warned not to put holiday plans on internet

Police urge West Berkshire residents not to post holiday information on social networking websites

THAMES Valley Police and West Berkshire Council have teamed up to send postcards reminding people that burglars are at their most active while householders are on holiday.

On one side the postcards feature advice on how to secure your home while you are away, including warnings to use automatic timers and to cancel milk and newspaper deliveries; on the other side they offer advice on how to stay safe during the rest of the summer.

Tips on the side of the card applying to protecting you home while you are away are:

- Use automatic timers for lights and radio.

- Lock all doors, windows and gates.

- Set your burglar alarm.

- Cancel all milk and papers.

- Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to keep an eye on your house.

- Do not put your home address on luggage labels.

- Lock important documents away.

- Do not broadcast your holiday plans.

Householders are also advised not to advertise their holiday plans on social networking sites such as Twitter or Facebook.
