Permit plan to ease roadwork disruption

Currently, utility companies only have to provide notice to West Berkshire Council that roadworks are to be carried out.
The council says that it does what it can to co-ordinate the work and keep traffic delays to a minimum – including co-ordination with its own highway improvements – but the situation is far from ideal.
However, following a lengthy process, the Government has now given the go-ahead for a permit scheme, which means that companies will have to request permission and a time slot for carrying out any works.
The council says the scheme will have many advantages, as roadworks can be scheduled to minimise traffic disruption and road users can be better informed of forthcoming works.
Alternative routes for public transport can also be better planned, while residents and businesses will have more time to consider access to their properties.
The council’s executive for highways, Pamela Bale (Con, Pangbourne), said: “This is excellent news that should benefit everyone. Other areas of the country which have started these schemes report a significant drop in complaints about traffic delays.”
The scheme is set to be introduced on March 1, 2015.
