'Monolithic block' - objections to Newbury Magistrates Court development
A 41-name petition objecting to plans for 28 flats on the former Newbury magistrates court site has been lodged with the council.
And a heritage organisation has added its weight to it by calling the proposed development a ‘monolithic block’.
“This is a prominent site, in a sensitive position next to the canal," said the Newbury Society.
"A new building here should reflect the traditional architecture of the town, in brick with pitched roofs and gables, for example.
“As proposed the four-storey flat-roofed design would present as a monolithic block from across the river.”
Other residents say the development would result in an increase in traffic, adding to what they claim is already poor air quality.
Newbury Town Council has also objected, based on it being out of keeping with the surrounding area, along with concerns relating to its proximity to the canal, the lack of parking in relation to units, and additional pressure on the sewers.
The former Newbury magistrates court has already been demolished and removed from the site.
The application is due to be discussed at Wednesday's Western Area Planning Committee meeting and is recommended for approval.
