Petition launched for lollipop lady facing possible redundancy

A petition to save a lollipop lady facing possible redundancy as part of West Berkshire Council’s £11m proposed cuts has received more than 100 signatures in the past 24 hours.
The patrol officer, known as Wendy, is employed by the council and has been playing a part in children’s safety at Fir Tree Primary School, Newbury, for around 20 years.
However, her job could now be under threat after the council announced it intends to withdraw all of its funding from school crossing patrols, which it says would save them £16,000 a year.
The council says it doesn't have to pay for the patrols and expects the eight that it currently funds– including Fir Tree – with two choices – to foot the bill themselves or stop the patrols.
On the petition page, directed towards West Berkshire Council, it says “Everyday our lollipop lady (who is the loveliest person anyone could meet) is there without fail everyday in wind, rain or shine, to help children and parents cross the road safely to attend school and again on the way home.
“There is a proposed redundancy, which will lead to what I and many other parents at the school believe is a very valuable asset to the council, school and it's community of family's who attend the school, At what cost is your child’s safety worth? The price of a lollipop lady/gents wage it seems.”
The petition will be handed to Fir Tree School and West Berkshire Council.
