Phew! Compost self-ignites to spread pong over Newbury

A compost heap which self-ignited was the source of the strong burning odour over Newbury and Thatcham this morning (Thursday).
The blaze originated at a farm near Curridge Green at 7.30am, according to the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue.
A team from Newbury fire station was sent to douse the flames, which were under control by the time firefighters arrived.
Residents as far apart as Shaw and Thatcham reported the stench, which was a talking point for followers of the Newburytoday.co.uk Twitter feed,
