Newbury Photography Club celebrate 75 years plus one
Newbury Photography Club are celebrating their 75 years +1 anniversary with an exhibition, opening on September 18.
The inaugural meeting of Newbury Photography Club – formerly Newbury and District Camera Club – was held at 7pm on Thursday, February 1, 1945, at the Tudor Café in Newbury (103 Northbrook Street) owned by club stalwart Jack Hole.
The café remained the home of the club for half a century, until it moved to the Conservative Club, then to Shaw Social Club and now its new home at the Royal British Legion. The subscription in 1945 was 10/- per annum, with an additional charge of 2/6 per evening (£5.50 today) payable to the Tudor Café for room hire.
In 2019 the club changed its name from Newbury Camera Club to Newbury Photography Club, but remains passionate about all things photographic and pride itself in embracing all standards of photography
The club had planned to hold a 75th year anniversary exhibition last year, but Covid put a stop to that. But rather than miss out and not mark the occasion, the club delayed things by a year and will be showing more than 40 images from some 20 of its members, starting on Saturday, through to October 10.
Entry is free and details about times can be found at newburyphotographyclub@gmail.com
If you pre-book with the Royal British Legion you can have a Sunday lunch on September 19 or the following Sundays and see some other events going on as part of Open Studios.
The Club holds a wide range of activities to interest all ages, and all levels of photographic skills. The programme includes:
• Talks and presentations on photography by leading professional and amateur photographers.
• Print and digital image competitions, both internal and with other clubs.
• Workshops and demonstrations of techniques aimed primarily at introducing us to photographic and image editing techniques.
• Informal gatherings, special interest groups and social events.
• A summer season of less formal meetings in June, July and August.
The Club prides itself in catering for all standards of photography, and in helping members to learn and to get the most enjoyment from photography.
The Club meets every Thursday evening at The Royal British Legion, Haig House, Pelican Lane, Newbury RG14 1NP. Although all meetings are On-Line during the Pandemic
Fully paid-up members of Newbury Photography Club become members of The Royal British Legion Newbury.
