Picture special: Tree felled in Victoria Park

A large horse chestnut tree in the Newbury park is being taken down by JPH Forestry

A LARGE diseased tree in Victoria Park, Newbury, is in the process of being taken down.

Last Thursday (January 6), Newbury Town Council cordoned off part of the path by the Kennet and Avon Canal for health and safety reasons while waiting for a nearby large horse chestnut tree to be felled.

The town council's services manager, Granville Taylor, said the tree was already being closely monitored, but that a recent independent survey of the tree showed the tree was in a worse condition than was first thought and that, sadly, it needed to be taken down.

He said it would be replaced by a different, “hardier” species of tree.

JPH Forestry started work on the tree felling yesterday (Wednesday) and the timber should be removed next week.
