PICTURES: Beers and bratwursts galore at Newbury Racecourse’s Oktoberfest celebrations
As Oktoberfest descended on Newbury Racecourse, last weekend’s Bavarian-themed celebrations brought the curtain down on another memorable flat season.
Across the two-day meeting on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, 8,373 punters – several of them donning lederhosen and beer maid dresses – enjoyed the Oktoberfest festivities and witnessed some thrilling racing action on the track.
Ellaria Sand, trained by Olie Sangster, took the spoils in the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Stakes (registered as The Radley Stakes).
Make You Smile made it two from two at Newbury when landing the Group 3 BetVictor Horris Hill Stakes on Saturday for trainer Hugo Palmer and jockey Harry Davies.
Another previous winner at Newbury, Max Vega, was ridden to victory by Rob Hornby in the Group 3 BetVictor St Simon Stakes, a race won by the Ralph Beckett-trained seven-year-old two years previously.
Despite the heavy ground, That’s Amore relished conditions to win the Fillies’ Novice Stakes by six lengths on debut for Ralph Beckett and Hector Crouch.
Newbury Racecourse CEO Shaun Hinds said: “It was a great conclusion to the flat season here at Newbury to welcome over 8,300 racegoers to the BetVictor Flat Finale meeting.
“My thanks go to all the team here who got the meeting on and transformed the racecourse into an Oktoberfest celebration.
“There was a fantastic atmosphere across the racecourse, and it was great to see so many racegoers enjoying the themed celebrations.”
