Pipeline construction starts today (Mon)
The pipe will carry water from Reading to be stored in Cold Ash meaning customers will benefit from a more secure supply of water.
At just over a foot in diameter, the pipeline will also reduce the amount of water that gets abstracted at Speen, helping to maintain water levels in the River Kennet. This will help to protect rare and treasured animals including water voles.
Thames Water will work in sections along Slanting Hill and Marlston Road in Hermitage to lay the 19.2km pipe between Fobney water treatment works in Reading and Cold Ash storage reservoir.
This part of the project is expected to take around three months to complete and signed diversion routes will be in place to minimise disruption while the roads are closed.
Work will start in Slanting Hill, then move in sections along Marlston Road between Slanting Hill and Wellhouse.
The road will be closed between Slanting Hill and the Old Pump House as of Monday.
Thames Water’s head of programme delivery, Andy Popple, said: “We’ve been talking to West Berkshire Council and local residents to get their advice on the best routes for the diversions and these will be in place for the duration of the work.
“We’re sorry for any disruption this may cause and will keep customers updated throughout.”
