Plans for Highclere Castle events building approved by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council

Plans to construct a new events building on the grounds of Highclere Castle have been approved by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

The large one-storey building will have enough space to seat 104 guests and it will contain kitchen areas, toilet facilities and a bar.

The new wood and glass permanent structure will be replacing two temporary marquees that currently host many of the events and dining experiences that take place at the Grade I-listed country house and estate.

In the report, planning officer Luke Benjamin said: “Revenue generated by visitors to the castle is essential for the continued upkeep and maintenance of the castle and its grounds.

“It is therefore vital that current visitor numbers can be maintained in order to safeguard the long-term future of this significant historic asset.

“It is recognised that the proposed events building would help enable the visitor numbers to be maintained and would also reduce pressure on the historic building as it would no longer be needed to be utilised as an events building.”

Owner of the Highclere estate Lady Carnarvon said: “We are looking forward to the creation of the new event space to be constructed of wood and glass benefiting from solar panels and energy efficient heating.

“The new structure will be far more sustainable than the current marquee which is erected and taken down throughout the year and has no capacity to conserve the heating within.

“The wooden structure will blend beautifully into the landscape, no longer disturbing the view of the castle.

“Planting a beautiful herb garden and some orchard trees around the pavilion will blend with nature and enhance the view.”
