Peace Garden to be included in Newbury Wharf plans

A firm of architects has been appointed to design the new look Newbury Wharf.

Adams & Sutherland first drafted the outline plans last year, and now it is back to put the details in.

A planning application has been submitted for phase 1 of the Wharf project, which involves improvements to the public access along the waterfront and the Peace Garden.

The waterfront key features include redefining the Wharf edge by installing new hardwood edging, with improved provision for leisure and more street furniture.

The Peace Garden key features include a more formal garden with dense planting supported by seating integrated into the landscape and new paths.

Grant funding of £375,000 from the Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership and £420,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund have been allocated to the project.

Martin Colston, (Lib Dem, Newbury Central), executive member for regeneration, growth and strategy development at West Berkshire Council, said: “We’re really pleased to be moving forward with this project and we are hoping to see work on the Wharf starting in mid-2024.

“Town centres are the beating heart of the community and by creating a place that is continuously changing and experimenting through pop-ups, exhibitions, festivals, and markets will leave its mark for Newbury to be an exciting and interesting place to live, work and visit.”
