Plans submitted for nearly 500 homes in Thatcham





That was the feeling to A2Dominion’s outline application for the phased development of up to 495 homes on land at Siege Cross Farm.
The proposals on the 34.59 hectare site also includes provision for a new primary school, a park and a community facility which could be a doctors or dental surgery.
Access to the development would come from enlarging the roundabout at the junction of the A4 and Pipers Way with another route coming off Floral Way between Archangel Way and Simmons Field.
The site is designated as countryside as it lies outside of Thatcham’s settlement boundary.
Residents raised several issues at two consultation exercises in 2012 and 2014, including that local roads would not cope with the additional traffic, an increased risk of flooding and that infrastructure in the town was at capacity.
And, while the majority were in favour of having a new primary school delivered, there were concerns about the impact on secondary education in the town.
District councillor for Thatcham North, Sheila Ellison, said: “My initial feeling is that it’s much too big… if it was half the size I would feel it was still too big.
