Plans to construct permanent events building on Highclere Castle grounds submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council
Plans to build a new events building on the grounds of Highclere Castle have been submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
The large one-storey building would have enough space to seat 104 guests and it would contain kitchen areas, toilet facilities and a bar.
The new wood and glass permanent structure would replace two temporary marquees that currently host many of the events and dining experiences that take place at the Grade I-listed country house and estate.
Documents outlining the proposal state that the marquees “detract from the immediate setting of the castle” because they are “not being reflective of the high status of the historic building and grounds”.
They also state that the marquees were initially put in place to “reduce the pressure on the historic accommodation” as events are often held within Highclere Castle itself.
The new events building would “ensure existing visitor numbers can be maintained whilst avoiding reliance on marquees and preventing damage to the historic interior”.
The documents state: “Revenue generated by visitors to the castle is essential in the continued upkeep and maintenance of the castle and grounds, as such it is vital that current visitor numbers can be maintained, in order to safeguard the long-term future of this significant historic asset.”
The plans insist that the building would maintain visitor numbers rather than increase them.
They state: “As the proposals will replace existing facilities, and are of a comparable size, it is not considered that they will result in any increase in visitor numbers, and so will not result in any impact on local highways or need for parking and vehicle access.”
The plans suggests several options for where the building could be situated within the grounds of the estate, with the preferred one being on the site of an existing herb garden south of the estate office.
As well as the events building, the planning application also details some external work next to the proposed development, such as a new herb garden and outdoor dining area.
Owner of the Highclere estate Lady Carnarvon said: “We are looking forward to the creation of the new event space to be constructed of wood and glass benefiting from solar panels and energy efficient heating.
“The new structure will be far more sustainable than the current marquee which is erected and taken down throughout the year and has no capacity to conserve the heating within.
“The wooden structure will blend beautifully into the landscape, no longer disturbing the view of the castle.
“Planting a beautiful herb garden and some orchard trees around the pavilion will blend with nature and enhance the view.”
