Plastic-free Thatcham and Newbury Eco Friends holding mass unwrap event
An environmental organisation is holding a plastic awareness event in Thatcham.
Plastic-free Thatcham and Newbury Eco Friends is holding a ‘Mass Unwrap’ on January 27.
A Mass Unwrap allows shoppers to unwrap their plastic-wrapped items while in-store and put their products straight into re-useable containers.
The plastic is collected up by volunteers and put into empty trollies in a bid to illustrate how much waste is generated in a short space of time.
Supermarkets then take the plastic away to recycle or dispose of it.
Organiser Plastic Free Thatcham said the event is friendly, non-confrontational and tonnes of fun.
It said: “Mass Unwrap is an awesome action that highlights the level of plastic packaging in supermarkets and puts people-pressure on them to change.
“Individuals, families, friends and communities can all take part.
“Simply shop and pay as normal and then unwrap food to put it straight into their bags, boxes or re-useable containers.”
The event is being held on January 27 between 10amand noon at the Co-Op in Thatcham Town Centre.
