Play area fencing petition submitted

A petition calling for fencing around the new toddler play area in Victoria Park has been signed by 1,267 people

MORE than 1,200 people have signed a petition calling for fencing to be installed around the new toddler play area in Victoria Park, Newbury.

A campaign was recently launched and a petition was organised by a small group of Newbury parents calling for fencing to be installed around the new toddler play area, which has proved popular since it opened earlier this year following a revamp.

However, not everyone has been in support of fencing the area and rival groups have been formed on social networking website, Facebook, with both groups gathering hundreds of members.

On Saturday, Newbury mothers Tina Gower and Alexandra Cook submitted the petition to Newbury Town Council, which contained 1,267 signatures, and Mrs Cook said she was very pleased with the response to the campaign and the number of people who had signed the petition both online and in person.

Meanwhile, the deputy leader of Newbury Town Council, David Allen (Lib Dem, Victoria), said he was very pleased that so many people were using the new play area, adding that it was good that people had taken the time to organise the petition.

Mr Allen added that town councillors would now investigate the possible costs of fencing the area, which he said would then be discussed at a future council meeting.
