Points make meatballs: IKEA in Calcot launches update to its Family scheme

IKEA, the home of meatballs in West Berkshire, is overhauling its membership scheme later this month and introducing a new benefit.

Customers will be able to collect points as they shop at the Calcot-based store.

As with other retailers with similar schemes, these points can then be redeemed for rewards.

How do I get rewards?

Customers need to have a valid IKEA Family card.

These are free, and instantly available in store or from its website.

Points are awarded for every £5 spent, and for interactions with the firm.

This includes logging into the IKEA Family account on the internet, creating an online wish list, taking part in an IKEA Family event, and booking and attending a planning appointment either online or instore.

The exception to this is kitchen planning.

Points will not be awarded when buying gift cards or purchasing as a business customer.

The points are valid for 18 months from purchase, and vouchers for 30 days on issue.

The company said that in the countries where the scheme is already operating, the most popular rewards are product vouchers and free meals.

What can the points be spent on?

IKEA says the rewards can be spent on discounts such as deliveries and new items. They can also be spent in the café on meals or cakes.

What else do I get with an IKEA Family card?

During weekdays, shoppers can enjoy a free tea or coffee in the café while visiting.

There are special discount offers across the year on select items of furniture, offering a saving.

The store runs free workshops and events across the year and gives shoppers an opportunity to have their say on how the Calcot store takes part in the firm’s People and Planet Positive projects.

Surprise offers including treats and rewards are sent out across the year.

And they also offer free insurance from it’s Just-In-Case scheme.

These benefits will be added to by its new rewards scheme.

What is IKEA’s Just-In-Case scheme?

If something breaks or goes wrong during the assembly of a flat-pack item of furniture, IKEA Family members can arrange a free exchange.

Customers need to visit the service desk, with their receipt and the broken parts and it will be replaced.

Stores also have a selection of spare parts available should an essential screw be missing during construction.

When will the new IKEA Family scheme launch?

The new scheme launches on Tuesday, August 27 – after the bank holiday weekend.

Why is IKEA doing this?

This is part of a global rollout and is called Reward Keys.

It has launched in Australia, Italy and Portugal, and the company aims to have in all stores by the end of 2025.

Announcing the scheme last year, Linda Ha, global customer engagement and loyalty manager at Ingka Group – which owns IKEA – said: “In true IKEA style, we are giving customers an updated loyalty programme with more and better benefits.

“The new rewards programme builds on our promise to help more people have a better life at home.

“By offering a variety of rewards, it will help customers get excited about new furnishing projects and enjoy all the benefits IKEA has to offer.”
