Detective Inspector Clare Knibbs, from Newbury CID, said: “The offences highlighted would not be described as a spate in that they are geographically not close enough, the methods of entry are very different - including time of day - and the types of premise attacked are all very different. For example one was Mortimer Post Office where a small piggy bank worth £6 was stolen through the shop window; another is a full dwelling burglary where jewellery valuing £500 has been stolen. They are therefore not all being treated as linked.
“Having said that there are a couple where only jewellery has been stolen that could be linked by the methods of entry and we are working with Reading and Wokingham police areas on an operation to collate all the forensic evidence and crime patterns across the county. There are no suspects at this stage but the investigations are in their early stages and there appears to be some very positive forensic work coming through.
“Our appeal to the public in these cases is to be ever vigilant and aware of their home security. We are spending time with victims and their neighbours doing home security assessments, and we are encouraged by a reduction of nearly 17 per cent in burglaries from last year. Home security assessments are available to do on line and we would encourage any resident with concerns to do this short survey.
“The jewellery burglary offences have occurred during the day so we would repeat our appeal for the public to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood to the police.”
Anyone with any information about the incidents should call police via 101.
If you don’t want to speak directly to the police you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.
No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
