Police arrest 16 people in connection with AWE protests
Activists set up camp at the site more than a week ago in protest against the replacement of Trident, the nuclear weapons system maintained at AWE.
All arrests made so far are for alleged obstruction of a public highway and those arrested are currently in police custody.
Earlier this morning the number of people arrested stood at eight, however, that figure has since doubled.
Chief Inspector Lindsey Finch, deputy local policing commander for Newbury, said: “We will continue to work with protesters to facilitate peaceful protest and ensure that any criminal activity is dealt with proportionately.”
A spokeswoman for AWE said: “AWE on-site security, the Ministry of Defence Police and Thames Valley Police are currently in attendance and will remain for the duration of any protest action.”
