Police hunt Newbury bag snatcher

Woman had handbag snatched near Newbury town centre in broad daylight on Sunday

POLICE are hunting a man who snatched a handbag from a woman in broad daylight in Newbury on Sunday (19).

The incident occurred between 12.30pm and 1pm on the over-bridge between Newbury Retail Park and Newtown Road as the 47-year old woman walked along the footpath leading to Newbury town centre.

She passed two men talking to each other, one of whom was sat on a bike, after which the man on the bike came up behind her and demanded that she hand over her handbag.

The shocked woman handed it over and the offender rode off, but then chased the man and pleaded for handbag back as it contained pictures of her son.

The offender stole £10 from the bag before handing it back and cycling off.

He is described as a white man in his late twenties, very slim, with a small moustache and bad teeth. He was wearing a long dark raincoat, a dark hat and sunglasses. The bike was a man's mountain bike.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Stephen Brown at Newbury police station on 0845 8 505 505 or anonymously on 0800 555 111, or by visiting any police station in person.
