Police issue warning to Lambourn householders

Police have warned householders to be on their guard following a distraction burglary

POLICE have warned householders to be on their guard following a distraction burglary.

The incident took place at a home in Edwards Hill, Lambourn, just before Christmas, at around 5.45pm on Monday, December 20.

The offender knocked at the door claiming to be from the water board and told the victim that he needed to check her water system as there was blue water in the pipes.

A second man then knocked at the door and, whilst the victim was distracted, the first man entered her bedroom.

Luckily nothing was taken in the incident but police have asked that, if you see any suspicious people or have any unexpected callers at your door, you should inform them via the 24-hour police enquiry centre on 0845 8 505 505.

In the neighbourhood police team's monthly bulletin it was also revealed that a number of burglaries to sheds, garages and barns have been reported, mostly in rural areas.

The team is also keen for people to report any sightings of a white man, 6ft, in his late 20s, of large build, with short, spiky, light brown hair and facial hair. He may be driving a blue Peugeot. He is being sought by Wiltshire Police but may also be committing crimes in the Lambourn and Hungerford area.

Meanwhile, a vehicle was stolen overnight on Saturday, December 11 last year from Northfields in Lambourn. The vehicle was a black Volkswagen Polo and it has since been found burnt out in the Faringdon area.

Neighbourhood officer Pc Claire Drewitt said: “We have not made any arrests in Lambourn relating to drugs this month. We are continuing to work on our drug priority and we ask people with information surrounding drug use in Lambourn to contact one of your local neighbourhood officers via the 24-hour police enquiry centre (above). Alternatively you can contact the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“We have seen a quiet period for hare-coursing but this will largely be down to the weather we have received over the last week or so.”

Despite the incidences above, overall crime in Lambourn has fallen by 8.9 per cent compared to the same period 12 months ago.

Burglaries have reduced by 20 per cent since this time last year. Vehicle crime has also reduced by 66 per cent and violent crime has fallen by 19 per cent.

Anti-social behaviour has reduced by 50 per cent.
