Police launch operation to tackle metal thefts
The operation aims to make it easier to trace sellers of stolen metal and dealers in the illegal business.
Individuals will be required to show proof of identity, including their current address, when selling scrap metal.
The operation has been adopted into the South East and South West regions after its success in the North East.
Detective Inspector Ian Wood, Thames Valley Police lead for the operation, said: “Operation Tornado is one of a number of measures currently being explored to restrict the sale and movement of stolen metal. It has been designed not to inhibit those that operate legitimate business, but to remove unscrupulous dealers who operate outside the law, and make it more difficult for thieves to make money by targeting our communities for metal.”
Six scrap metal suppliers across West Berkshire were searched in May, including A4 Metal Recycling Limited in Beenham Industrial Park, in an attempt to restrict illegal metal sales.
Scrap metal suppliers who do not comply with the operation will be subject to a risk assessment conducted by the police.
