Police warning as vulnerable residents targeted by cold callers
Elderly and vulnerable people are being targeted by cold callers who jack up prices when it comes to payment.
Thames Valley Police said that rogue traders have been knocking on doors across the region offering services such as tree cutting, jet washing driveways, clearing gutters or collecting scrap metal.
They offer a price verbally before starting the work, but this changes when it comes to payment, with the contractor often demanding additional cash.
Some victims will be seen as easy targets for repeat visits.
A spokesperson for the police said in such situations they should be contacted, either on the non-emergency number of 101 or 999 if the situation warranted it.
They warned: “There have been some unfortunate cases where verbal agreements have been made and when it comes time to pay there has been a large increase in the cost or, once money has been handed over, there has been some disagreement over how much has been paid followed by demands for more money.”
Police want people to think carefully before engaging any workers.
“We would always advise that if someone knocks on your door asking if you need work to be done, do not agree to anything there and then,” the spokesperson added.
“Tell them that you will think about it and then speak to someone you trust , ether it be family, friend or neighbour.
“There is no obligation to agree to something on the spot and it is always better to ensure they are a trustworthy company before agreeing.
“Please remember to stay safe, never agree on the spot, ask someone to help check the company and if you feel threatened call 999.”
