Police warning issued over bank card scam

Courier fraud, which often targets the elderly and the vulnerable, sees the victim receive a call from fraudsters claiming to be from their bank or the police.
They tell the victim that there has been suspicious activity on their account and advise them to call the bank from the number on the back of their card.
The victim disconnects and calls their bank or the police, however, the fraudster keeps the line open and pretends to be a member of staff at the bank or a police officer.
They then obtain the victim's trust, obtain their details and tell them that their card will be collected and a replacement will be delivered.
A courier is then sent to collect the card from the victim and a fake card is delivered.
Using this method, the offender has obtained the person’s name, address, full bank details, the card and the PIN.
The bank cards are then used fraudulently without the victim’s knowledge.
Police say that there are several variants of the scam and are urging people to report any suspicious calls.
Police advise to end the call immediately and to inform elderly or vulnerable family members, friends, or neighbours about the scam.
If you receive this type of call, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 1232040
