Police are warning parents of WhatsApp scammers impersonating their children to trick them out of money.

The scammer pretends to be the victim's "eldest and cutest daughter", contacting them with the message: "Hey mum it’s me. I got a new number u can delete the old one."

Claiming they just purchased a new iPhone, they then pretend they are having problems with their banking app, and request money.

"Could you possibly pay for it for me and I’ll return it soon as possible? Sorry to bother u with this."

If you are victimised by this scam, call Action Fraud on 0300 1232040.
