Pomp and splendour of Battle Proms returns to Highclere Castle




Heavy traffic in surrounding area likely on Saturday

THE pomp and splendour of Battle Proms returns to Highclere Castle on Saturday.

Picnickers can spread out on the grass in the spectacular surroundings of the castle parkland, after gates open at 4pm, when it will be time to unpack hampers and uncork the Champagne.

The action starts at 5.30pm with a First World War cavalry display, including mounted skills at arms, with re-enactors sporting full regalia, before the Rockabellas take to the stage at 6.30pm.

At 7.30pm the musical programme starts with a rousing evening gun salute to commemorate 100 years since the Battle of the Somme.

The English Field Artillery will fire a volley of shots from a vintage field gun.

A Spitfire air display will be choreographed to the opening music, including Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March number 4.

A classical celebration conducted by Douglas Coombes will be hosted by BBC presenter Pam Rhodes, with arias by soprano Denise Leigh.

Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, will precede the thunderous spectacle of Beethoven’s Battle Symphony, complete with 193 live cannons, musket fire and fireworks.

Proms favourites, such as Rule Britannia, will be followed by a fireworks finale, before the show closes at around 10pm.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys in the surrounding area, due to heavy traffic,
