Portillo's TV film crew moved on from Parkway
Presenter Michael Portillo and his team were recording footage for the next series of Great British Railway Journeys in April when the crew was told it had to leave the shopping centre.
The primetime BBC2 series sees former politician Mr Portillo document his travels along famous and historic railway lines, while revealing the history of local towns en route.
The crew had been filming a piece about one of the town’s most famous residents, John Winchcombe, also known as Jack of Newbury, and his former house, still standing in Marsh Lane, off Northbrook Street. Marsh Lane was formerly public land until sold to developers by West Berkshire Council to provide access to Parkway.
The programme is produced by Boundless Productions, and a spokeswoman for its parent company, Fremantle Media UK, Nicola Wilkinson, said: “[We] did have the relevant clearances from the council to film in the area.
“The production team works closely with the local community to ensure there is no disruption caused.
“There was no delay. They just crossed the road and continued where they were allowed to film.”
A spokesman from Parkway, who would not give his name, said: “To ensure the security and privacy of our shoppers we ask that any requests to film at Parkway are made prior to arrival.”
He said that the crew arrived without permission and security asked them to leave, but added: “If they let us know in advance we would be delighted to welcome them back to film at Parkway.”
Encouraging visitors to the town and increasing footfall in both Newbury town centre and to Parkway is a priority for West Berkshire Council, and its chief executive Nick Carter told the Newbury Weekly News last summer that it should be doing everything it could to provide “that day-out feel” to entice people to the town.
Yet council spokesman Keith Ulyatt refused to be drawn on whether the actions of the Parkway representatives had been appropriate.
He said that the council had no control over Parkway matters unless it was a planning issue.
A date for the broadcast of the new series of Great British Railways Journeys has not yet been confirmed, however Ms Wilkinson said it was likely to be in early 2014.
