Positive feedback for bike hire scheme despite low figures

The scheme was launched by the Newbury’s Visitor Information Centre in July and currently stores six bicycles.
Tourism Officer Carolyn Taylor says she is not overly concerned with the poor figures. She said last month: “The feedback has been great. A couple of ladies last weekend said how great the suspension on the bikes was and how perfect they were for riding along the canal tow path.
“Another American couple used the bikes to get to Donnington Castle/ Snelsmore Common and had a wonderful time. All have said that the bikes are great value for money and we have had no problems whatsoever with any damage. The bikes are completely secure so cannot be stolen.”
Mrs Taylor feels that a lack of awareness and publicity has hampered the success of the scheme and not the price of the bikes at £14 per adult and £7 per child.
“We did do quite a lot of research on price and found it to be very fair” she said. “I expect the figures to probably drop over the winter months as a lot of people are ‘fair weather’ cyclists but I’m hoping that once the weather warms up again the numbers will pick up.”
The bikes remain available for day hire at the Newbury Visitor Information Centre and the centre are awaiting the delivery of a teenage sized bike to better target the family market, according to Mrs Taylor.
