Posters placed in Ramsbury for Sian murder case

Police continue to urge anyone who spotted a green Toyota Avensis in the area on March 19 to come forward

DETECTIVES are in Ramsbury this afternoon (Monday) distributing posters in relation to the murder of Swindon woman Sian O'Callaghan.

Police are appealing to anyone who was 'lamping' or poaching in the area, four miles west of Hungerford, on March 19, the morning the 22-year-old went missing shortly after leaving a Swindon nightclub.

Det Supt Steve Fulcher, who is leading the inquiry, said today: "I would repeat my appeal for anyone out 'lamping' or poaching in the Ramsbury area at anytime from 2am on Saturday, March 19, to contact the force with any information they might have about suspicious activity in the area, a green Toyota Avensis estate car (pictured) or persons in the area around that time.

"I would stress again that I only want information from you that is relevant to the Sian O'Callaghan inquiry. We are not interested in prosecuting anyone for lamping or poaching."

Earlier today taxi driver Christopher Halliwell, aged 47, of Ashbury Avenue, Swindon, appeared at Swindon Magistrates' Court charged with the kidnap and murder of Miss O'Callaghan.

Following his court appearance Miss O'Callaghan's father, Mick O'Callaghan, paid tribute to his daughter.

He said: “As a family we wanted to express a few words about our beautiful daughter, a wonderful sister to Liam, Lora and Aiden and loving girlfriend to Kevin.

"Sian was a bubbly, friendly, caring and loving girl. She was instantly likeable, beautiful and considerate. Although our pain at this time is raw and overwhelming, our memories of Sian will be a comfort to us in the dark days ahead.

"We would like to firstly thank Steven Fulcher and his team for their in exhaustive work in finding and bringing Sian back to us so speedily.

"Elaine and I, Kevin, Liam, Lora and Aiden would like to thank all our friends and family for their continued support, words cannot express how comforting this has been for us.

"We would also like to thank the community in Swindon for their overwhelming kindness and support. The sheer numbers of people involved in the searches, the vigils, flowers, lantern lighting and murals to Sian are incredibly touching and beautiful. Thank you.

"It only leaves me to say a thank you to the press and media for their respect of our privacy for us as a family at this dreadful time and may we ask you to continue that respect of privacy for the coming difficult months."

Miss O'Callaghan's disappearance had initially sparked a major search of Savernake Forest, near Hungerford, involving hundreds of police and local villagers before her body was found near Uffington, Oxfordshire, on Thursday, March 24.
