Preparations begin for Chinese New Year

A lion dance and traditional Chinese games will form part of the celebrations in Newbury on Saturday, February 5

A LION dance and traditional Chinese games will be part of the Chinese New Year celebrations at St Bartholomew's school on Saturday, February 5.

It will be the third year the popular event has been organised by the West Berkshire Minority Ethnic Forum, and falls under the Year of the Rabbit.

A variety of activities to entertain guests include crafts, stalls, workshops such as Thai dance, Indonesian martial arts and storytelling.

Forum chairman, Nadeem Soomro, said: "This event is a great opportunity for local people to enjoy and take part in celebrations from around the world. It is an excellent way to learn more about Chinese culture, faith and customs whilst also having fun."

The forum, with the support of West Berkshire Council and Falkland Primary School, has been running Chinese and Mandarin classes, which are open to all children of the community. These children will be dressing up in traditional outfits and performing some Chinese songs at the event.

The Chinese New Year celebrations will be held at St Bartholomew's school from 1pm until 4pm. Entry is free, although there may be a small charge for some activities.
