THE cost of each bin in the garden and food waste collection service will be reduced by £4 for the upcoming year, West Berkshire Council has announced.

The move means the subscription service will cost £46 for the year 2021-22, which will begin on August 30.

The reduced rate will be available to all garden waste customers, including those renewing their direct debit from last year and any new subscribers this year.

The price of a green bin permit is being reduced after garden and food waste collections in West Berkshire were suspended for two weeks earlier this month.

The council said the move is a one-off and is being done as a goodwill gesture.

The decision comes after the council temporarily suspended its garden and food waste collection service last week for two weeks due to staff shortages caused by staff self-isolating and a national shortage of HGV drivers.

The service is set to be resumed next Tuesday, with the council collecting “reasonable amounts of additional garden waste presented with green bins during their first collection”.

West Berkshire Council executive member for the environment Steve Ardagh-Walter (Con, Thatcham Colthrop & Crookham) said: “We are grateful to our residents for their continued understanding during the service disruption.

“As we move forward I am pleased to announce that residents will be able to sign up to the garden waste service at a reduced rate and this payment should be made by direct debit making the subscription process easier for future renewals.

“This service is an easy way to recycle your garden waste with over 31,000 residents choosing to subscribe last year.

“We look forward to serving even more households in the upcoming subscription period.”

The council said the reduced subscription rate should not be considered as setting a precedent and does not extend to other council collections and services.

Subscriptions are now open for the 2021/22 garden waste collection service.

In a change to previous years, payment can only be made by direct debit and customers are encouraged to sign up online as much as possible.

This, the council says, will give residents a safe and secure way of payment as well as peace of mind that the subscription will be paid for year-on-year without having to reapply.

A reminder email or letter has been sent out to all current subscribers inviting them to renew their existing subscription(s) by direct debit online.

The council is encouraging all interested residents to subscribe or renew by August 26 to ensure their garden waste collections continue with no interruption from August 30.

Interested residents can subscribe for the 2021/22 service at any point until June 30, 2022.
