Prison officers claim former Beenham man confessed to 1966 murder
Former prison officers at Durham Prison say David Burgess, aged 64, formerly of Stoneyfield, Beenham, admitted to murdering 17-year-old Newbury girl Yolande Waddington on October 28, 1966.
Mr Burgess, who denies murder, is alleged to have made the confessions in 1968 while he was serving a life sentence for murdering two other Beenham girls, nine-year-olds Jeanette Wigmore and Jacqueline Williams on April 17, 1967.
The court heard on Thursday (28) that Mr Burgess was a prisoner on E wing, which was a section for whose serving long or life sentences at Durham Prison.
In a statement made at the time by prison officer William Malcolm, he claims that Mr Burgess confessed to the murder of Miss Waddington.
Mr Malcolm said that Mr Burgess told him he was a member of a gang of petty thieves.
According to Mr Malcolm, Mr Burgess said that Miss Waddington (pictured right) ‘would have to be put out of the way’ because she knew about his gang’s criminal activity.
Joel Bennathan, defending, accused Mr Malcolm of questioning Mr Burgess in prison on behalf of the police.
Mr Malcolm denied the allegation, saying: “I wasn’t a police informer. You’re way out.”
The trial continues.
