Pro-Palestine march in Newbury tomorrow
The Newbury Friends of Palestine have organised the “Solidarity March” which is expected to begin on Pound Street at 2.30pm on Friday. Similar large-scale protests have been held across the UK, including in London where hundreds of protestors have taken to the streets to voice their opposition to the conflict in recent weeks.
Shahzad Nadeem, founder of the West Berkshire Peace and Integration Forum, who will be participating in the march, said: “we have arranged a protest march next Friday from 2:30pm starting from Pound Street, passing through the high street and ending up at the clock tower.
“We are expecting more than fifty people to attend the march which will be more of an informative process to let people know what’s happening on the ground in Gaza.”
Mohammad Awais Tahir, speaking on behalf of Friends of Palestine said: “As far as I know this march is the first of its kind in Newbury.
“We saw support for the Palestinian cause in the discussion held by MP Richard Benyon and in the stall we had on Saturday. This protest is just another way of showing our support with the people in Gaza.”
Friends of Palestine and the Peace and Integration Forum were also in Newbury town centre last Saturday (pictured above) to raise public awareness about the situation in Gaza. Last month, unidentified trespassers also hung a Palestinian flag over Hungerford Town Hall in an apparent act of protest.
