Pub plans submitted for Newbury College grounds
The brewery wants to put the family pub just yards away from a children’s nursery and on the fringes of the proposed Sandleford development.
If approved, licensing hours would be Monday to Thursday from 10am to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 1am and Sunday 11am to midnight.
The pub and restaurant would have space for 180 covers and also feature a terrace, garden, and children’s play area with equipment, along with 59 car parking spaces and 12 cycle stands.
It would also include a three-bedroom manager’s flat and a yard to provide enclosure for recycling skips and refuse bins and staff cycles.
Vehicle access would be via the existing entrance to the college from Monks Lane, while the existing pedestrian footway from Monks Lane to the college would be rerouted to the west of the pub.
The gate at the college entrance would also be relocated - to the south of the Marston’s vehicular entrance - to maintain security for the college and nursery during evenings and weekends.
Greenham Parish Council has written a formal letter of objection to the plans, saying that the licence application did not address the issue of unacceptable behaviour, such as drunkenness through binge drinking.
It added that a licensed premises in close proximity to an educational establishment, which includes a nursery school, was “inappropriate”.
Marston’s said that the pub would create around 50 jobs and added that it wanted to bring a ‘vacant site’ into beneficial use.
