Public consultation for introduction of town car club

That is the question being asked by West Berkshire Council after it launched a public consultation into the matter.
The council is considering a ‘pay-as-you-go’ type scheme, with similar schemes in other parts of the country costing around £4.50 per hour plus an extra 21p per mile driven.
A statement released by the council reads: “Car club members typically drive fewer miles than car owners, which in turn could help to reduce congestion on local roads in Newbury and improve levels of locally produced carbon emissions.
“Membership of a car club can replace the need to own a little used second car, or for some people owning a car at all.”
West Berkshire councillor Tony Vickers (Lib Dem, Northcroft) said he thought the car club was a great idea.
“The idea is brilliant, we just need to encourage people to see the sense of it and send in a positive response,” he said. “To me, it’s an important part of the whole business of keeping Newbury as a pleasant place to live.
“There‘s so many cars just sitting there not being used all day, by using a car club car you are reducing the numbers sitting there doing nothing.”
All those who submit a consultation response will also be entered into a free prize draw to win £50 in high street shopping vouchers.
The closing date for responses is Friday, June 28.
