Public toilets in Newbury to be demolished

West Berkshire Council has submitted an application to tear down the loos north of the bandstand, adjacent to Newbury Bowling Club.
The block is said to be beyond repair.
A letter from the council’s countryside and planning department said the toilets have a negative impact on the appearance of the conservation area and to knock them down would enhance the character of that area of the town.
The decision could foreshadow changes to that particular area of Newbury, however there has been little update on the stalled pavilion project which has been mooted for Victoria Park since 2007 but has shown little progression.
West Berkshire Council believe the project remains a key element of Vision 2025, but the project is not expected to develop until another public consultation has been carried out.
No objections have been raised to the proposals by the Newbury Society or Environmental Health, and a decision is expected to be made by June 22.
