Pupils at Francis Baily Primary School in Thatcham compete in athletic and cross-country competitions




Pupils at a Thatcham primary school have competed in some of the toughest athletic and cross-country competitions in the county.

The 24 Francis Baily Key Stage 2 pupils competed at Bradfield College in an X-Country Race.

It was a tough endurance race, where pupil Emily Allport finished second in her race out of 84.

Jack Budge finished fifth in his race out of 81 and the star of the day was Ella McDonald who finished first in her Year 5 and 6 girls race.

Overall Francis Baily positioned second out of 15 schools.

Francis Baily sports coach Sam Adnams said it was a great event and all children ran extremely well.

Following on from Bradfield College’s X-Country event, Francis Baily entered the West Berkshire X-Country Championships at Newbury Showground.

The primary school entered 60 pupils all competing in races with more than 350 children.

After a fantastic afternoon, and excellent team work, Francis Baily Year 5 and Year 6 boys finished third in their category.

In total, Francis Baily came third in 50 schools, beating their previous record.

All staff that attended the event were immensely proud.

Continuing on from the success of its athletes, Francis Baily was selected to represent West Berkshire in the Indoor Athletics County Finals.

It was a tough half day of obstacles races, six-lap paarlauf race, sprints, relays, chest push, long jump, vertical jump, triple jump, speed bounce and javelin.

An amazing opportunity for Francis Baily pupils.
