Pupils prepare for poolside action at Olympics

Selected pupils from Park House School, Newbury, to become 'Gamesmakers' for London 2012 Olympic Games

THESE lucky Park House School pupils and their teacher are off to the 2012 Olympics this summer.

And they will have more than just a front row seat - they will be part of the action.

The team is celebrating the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help out at the games following their success at a national selection event held at the Olympic Park.

The pupils will now become official 'Gamesmakers' and will work at the Aquatics Centre to manage and analyse performance data from the swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo events.

The role is considered to be amongst the most prestigious and privileged of all the unique Gamesmaker opportunities and will involve direct access to the poolside area.

They were initially selected by the school on the basis of a combination of their team-working, ICT and communication and presentation skills. All of these were tested at the selection event attended by teams from across the country.

The team is Keryn Osteritter, aged 17, Liam Sheppard, aged 15, Lara Jones, aged 16, Laura Stafford, aged 17 and 15-year-old Thomas Graves.

Lara Jones said: “We're going to be right there, poolside. It will be really long hours and quite stressful but we can't wait.”

Head of IT Andrew Norwood, who will accompany them, said: “They will be the first to find out results and pass them on to commentators. It's a very prestigious role.”

Keryn Osterritter added: ‘Working as an ICT Technician in the Aquatic Centre will be such an honour and to be pool side will simply be an amazing experience. We are all very proud to have been selected and to be representing our school at such a historical event'.

Headteacher Derek Peaple said: “The team's achievement in gaining selection as Gamesmakers from national competition is truly remarkable. This once in a lifetime opportunity is a thoroughly deserved reflection of their outstanding all-round skills and ability and we are thrilled for them.”
