Pupils to discover the joys of astronomy

Newbury Astronomical Society is holding an open evening for about 90 pupils from five local primary schools

PUPILS from five primary schools in and around Newbury will gather at Trinity School tonight (Friday) to discover the joys of astronomy.

Newbury Astronomical Society, which is celebrating its 30th birthday this year, will hold an open evening to introduce the youngsters to the heavens above.

So far, 90 pupils from the five schools, Robert Sandilands, Winchcombe, Speenhamland, Shaw and Fir Tree, have indicated that they will attended.

A spokesman for the society, Steve Harris, said: “There will be about nine members from the society there with telescopes and if it is a clear night, we will have them set up outside.

“The idea is that we will just stand back and let them get on with it, occasionally pointing them in the right direction.

“They will, for instance, be able to look at the gas clouds of Orion which is actually a location where starts are born, so there should be plenty of excitement for all.”
