‘It is shameful that Laura Farris has broken her promise to protect animals from cruel smuggling gangs’

West Berkshire residents are being asked to sign a petition to force the Government to act to end puppy smuggling.

The Liberal Democrat party has launched an online campaign at the same time as criticising Newbury’s MP for backing delaying the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill.

“The Conservative Party promised to deliver this bill in their election manifesto, and the Government even drafted the wording of the new law," said council leader Lee Dillon (Lib Dem, Thatcham North East).

“It is shameful that Laura Farris has broken her promise to protect animals from cruel smuggling gangs.

"Laura Farris and this Conservative Government have left pet owners, animal welfare charities and residents of West Berkshire rightfully angry.

"The Liberal Democrats want to see greater protections for puppies, with criminals who target our beloved pets handed harsher punishments.”

On Wednesday, June 21, the Liberal Democrats re-tabled the Government puppy smuggling bill.

But Conservative MPs, including Mrs Farris, refused to back a motion to bring the bill back within the next month and instead launched another consultation.

West Berkshire Liberal Democrats have criticised the move, accusing the Government of breaking another manifesto pledge and allowing traffickers to exploit the pet market.

The party has launched an online campaign and petition to end puppy smuggling and is urging pet owners and residents of West Berkshire to sign at libdems.org.uk/puppy
