Purley man jailed for over 10 years after pleading guilty to death of cyclists

Alexander Walters, aged 31, of Beech Road, was sentenced to 10 years and three months for dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking, after pleading guilty yesterday (Wednesday April 16) at Reading Crown Court to a total of seven offences.
The other offences included driving while disqualified and driving while uninsured.
He was sentenced to 12 months for each of the other offences to run concurrently.
On Thursday February 13, at 9pm, two cyclists, Reading Borough Council workers, 30-year-old father-of-two John Morland, of Elvaston Way, Tilehurst, and father-of-five, Kris Jarvis, aged 39, of Brocksett Close, Reading died, following a collision involving a BMW car on the A329.
Tests showed, as well as being over the drink-drive limit, Mr Walters had also taken cocaine within the previous 24 hours.
He fled from police in the stolen BMW, driving at around 70mph in a 30mph zone when he lost control and hit the two cyclists, before then hitting a lamp post.
The court heard he had appeared in court on 14 occasions, over 67 offences, and was disqualified from driving for four years in 2010.
An independent investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) continues into the role of Thames Valley Police (TVP) in the incident.
