Quads story strikes a chord
Proud parents Julian and Sharon Turner were amazed to find they were expecting a multiple birth after years of unsuccessfully trying to conceive.
Even more astonishingly, the Turner quads - James, Joshua, Lauren and Emily - are two sets of identical twins.
The babies, delivered on March 30 at just 29 weeks and three days into the pregnancy, are still in the Buscot Special Care Baby Unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.
But the Turners, who live in Upper Lambourn, are hoping they will be home by June - and that’s when they will need help.
IT specialist Mr Turner said last week: “We have contacted all of the local colleges to ask if they would like to send any students on childcare courses to us for work experience.
“Unfortunately they don't seem to do this any more. Hence we would like to reach out to any medical students or trainee nurses that are looking to get hands-on experience with babies, as any assistance would be greatly appreciated, however small.”
As a result, many local people have offered help.
Mother of triplets Katharine Ward, of Woodlands St Mary, said: “We have a bag of little cardigans they'd be welcome to have for the new babies. I’d also be very happy to make some meals to take over. A friend did this for us and it was a godsend.”
Other student paediatricians and midwives offered help in exchange for work experience while several West Berkshire photographic studios offered free sessions.
The Dutton family from Speen offered to donate an all-terrain, twin-size mountain buggy and mother-of-two, Woodlands St Mary resident Nicky Midwinter was among those offering practical assistance.
Mr Turner said; “It’s wonderful and it will take us a while to get round to answering them all. But we’re very grateful because I’m conscious that I’m going to need to focus on work, too, now. It’s going to be great to have them all home, too, but that might not be until June when tghe doctors are confident they’re breathing without any assistance.”
* WOULD you like to gain childcare experience by helping the Turners with their quadruplets?
