Charity quiz night celebrates 200th outing in aid of Maureen Church Fund, raising money for the Victoria Ward, Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading

A charity quiz is celebrating its 200th outing tomorrow (Saturday) night.

David Church, from Speen, has been raising funds for the Victoria ward at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, in memory of his wife Maureen, for the past 23 years.

Mrs Church died three days before Christmas in 1999 following a long battle with severe diabetes and Mr Church held the first quiz on July 1, 2000, to officially launch the Maureen Church Fund.

The fund is his way of saying thanks for the care the ward provided to Mrs Church.

Mr Church has previously told Newburytoday: “The reason I set this fund up is for the saddest of reasons.

“[Maureen] put up a long fight to try to save her life, we can’t let that life go in vain.”

Money raised through the Maureen Church Fund has paid for such things as the restoration of the restroom on Victoria Ward, blood pressure machines and portable heart monitoring machines.

The 200th Celebration Quiz will take place at the Community Centre in Wash Common, from 7.15pm on Saturday (December 2).

Teams of up to five cost just £7 to enter and there are great prizes to be won. A raffle will also be held.

There will be presentations by the quiz organiser and the hospital charity.
