Race for Lifer's 'flashmob' hit Newbury

Tattoos and funky nail art on offer

Women shopping in Newbury's Park Way today (Friday April 17) might return home with the odd 'tattoo' - or funky nail art -- as a Race for Life recruitment 'flashmob' hit town.

Cancer Research UK fundraisers want mothers, daughters, grandmothers, friends and colleagues to unite to form a 'pink army' at Race for Life 5k and 10k events, at Newbury Showground on Sunday July 5.

To get the message across, a team from the charity will set up stall in the Park Way from 10am today (Friday) with chance for shoppers to try out the bold face paint designs and funky nail art associated with this year's events.

They will also have chance to try out the Race for Life 'tattoos' - and take a fun-packed selfie afterwards, in the charity's 'battle HQ' tent .

Fiona Miller, Area Events Manager for Berkshire, said the team would arrive with the tent at the shopping centre to give women of all ages a chance to experience the "power and the passion," she said of Race for Life, where the atmosphere was always electric, and to find out what’s in store at at the Newbury event in July and continued:

"We hope it will motivate women of all shapes and sizes to sign up as soon as possible.”

“Every hour, around 5 people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East. That’s why we are calling on the brave ladies of Newbury to help make this year’s Race for Life our best ever. It doesn’t matter how fit or fast you are because Race for Life is not competitive. It’s about an army of women standing shoulder-to-shoulder, ready to take on cancer."

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, raises millions of pounds every year to help beat 200 different types of cancer.

Last year, 2,047 women in Newbury pulled on their trainers and put their heart and soul into raising £114,106 for life-saving research. This year, organisers need 2200 women and girls to stride out to help raise £120,000 to help save more lives.
