Racist rant man must compensate victim in cash

Offender convicted of subjecting Sainsbury’s security guard to tirade of abuse

A CUSTOMER who subjected a shocked Sainsbury’s security guard to a prolonged, racist rant must pay him compensation.

At a previous hearing, Newbury magistrates were told how 41-year-old father of two, Darren Rufus Hatton, left Sainsbury’s in Hectors Way, Newbury, before he could be apprehended.

But just days later he walked back in and did it again

His victim, Rajiz Butt, who works in the store, later told police: “Doing the job I do, I expect abuse, but this was too much.

“I found it very racist and I was distressed by it.”

Mr Hatton was subsequently banned from the store and, when arrested, answered “no comment” to all questions.

He admitted two charges of racially aggravated harassment; one committed on March 9 and the second on March 13 this year.

His list of previous convictions includes offences of being drunk and disorderly and dangerous driving, the court heard.

Ben May, defending, said: “You will notice there was a gap in his offending.

“This was when he went ‘on the wagon’ and became teetotal. But he fell off the wagon quite spectacularly. He had a disagreement with his partner and, as a result, went on a four-day ‘bender’.

“He has no memory of those four days.

“He gave ‘no comment’ answers because he simply couldn’t remember. He is very sorry and ashamed of his actions.”

Mr May said his client was in receipt of benefits and would be unable to pay a large fine.

After retiring to confer, magistrates adjourned sentencing for reports to be prepared.

At the sentencing hearing on Thursday, July 9, Helen Waite, prosecuting, reminded the court of the “deeply unpleasant incident”.

Magistrates made Mr Hatton subject to a 12-month community order with a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

They made no order for costs because of his lack of means.

They ordered Mr Hatton to pay Mr Butt £100 compensation, however, plus a statutory surcharge of £60.
