Raiders thwarted by security at Hungerford Arcade

'We will not be intimidated by these people'

THIS was the scene of devastation at Hungerford Arcade after a raider smashed through the roof.

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday, October 15.

But, despite the damage, the attempted jewellery raid was thwarted by the arcade’s state-of-the-art security systems.

Arcade manager Alex Rogers said: “The police response was fantastic and they arrived at the site in under five minutes with enough units to keep every exit covered.

“Because of the use of the roof to gain access, the police requested a helicopter to cover any other escape routes, such as neighbouring rooftops.”

He added: “We are always upgrading security here and we will continue to do so – we will not be intimidated by these people.”

In an apparently unrelated incident, a walk-in thief stole a £3,000 bronze duck statue from Kimmer Antiques in the High Street over the same weekend.
