A RAIL cheat has been landed with a bill for hundreds of pounds – for trying to dodge an £8 fare.

Leon Green was due in the dock at Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday, October 22.

But he did not turn up and the case against him was found proved in his absence.

The 35-year-old, of London Road, Newbury, was convicted of travelling on a Great Western Railway (GWR) train at Reading West on Wednesday, May 19, without paying his £8.60 fare, and with the intention of avoiding that payment.

Mr Green was fined £220.

In addition, he was ordered to pay £180 costs, plus a statutory victim services surcharge of £34.

Finally, Mr Green was ordered to pay GWR £8.60 in compensation for the lost fare.
