Torrential rain and roadworks cause traffic chaos in Newbury

Traffic chaos continues around Newbury town centre this morning (Tuesday).

A combination of torrential rain, roadworks and back to school traffic has seen roads flooded and gridlocked.

One lane is closed on the A339 northbound due to utility repair and maintenance works being undertaken by Scottish and Southern Power Distribution.

The lane closure is in place from the Burger King roundabout, over the railway bridge to the lights at Cheap Street.

Traffic is also heavy on the roads leading out on to the A339, including the A343 from St John's roundabout up to Burger King roundabout and Greenham Road.

The closure has caused heavy delays in the area across the weekend and yesterday and the closure is expected to remain in place until Friday (November 4).

Elsewhere, Lower Way in Thatcham is also gridlocked, with traffic queuing back from the A4 at West Berkshire Community Hospital to Parsons Down School.
