Rain stays away as district floods with red, white and blue
The heavens smiled on West Berkshire today (Monday) as street parties and diamond jubilee bashes avoided the torrential downpours which had beset yesterday's events to mark the Queen's 60th year on the throne.
In Newbury, street party organisers crossed fingers and toes that yesterday's scenes would not be repeated- and their prayers were answered.
From Paddock Road, which was transformed into a wash of red, white and blue with houses and even cars covered in bunting and flags, to Howard Road, which had a live band playing in the middle of the street, the town embraced a stirring party spirit.
Street parties were also held in The Marlowes, St George's Road, where one attendant recalled the coronation party at the same location in 1952, and Bartlemy Close.
Organisers of a diamond jubilee party at the Cottage Inn, Upper Bucklebury, were staggered as 1,000 people descended on the pub's grounds.
The dry weather saw hordes pack into the pub and snap up the 500 wristbands on offer within a few hours as families kept on arriving to take in the fun.
The co-owner of the pub Mandy Bush said she was in shock at the size of the turnout and the good it will have done for charity as the event was being held in aid of a cystic fibrosis charity.
